SPRING DECORATING IN YOUR HOME

Easter is early this year so it seems a bit silly to bring out ALL the bunnies, ducklings and chicks placing them in every corner and on every surface in your home. However, those spring animals need to make an appearance this year. Instead of spreading them about, keep them all together and make a huge statement with your collection. Add some green trees, some fun eggs and maybe a garland or two; be certain to place things on risers to create a more natural scene. Nothing says spring like darling baby animals. Maybe one weather resistant rabbit can go on the porch or at the entrance to your home. You know, a rabbit is the symbol of youth-health filled and enthusiastic. Rabbits are a perfect example of spring and a harbinger of good times ahead and new beginnings!

It is time to replace the dark reds and rich browns and greens with some pastels and other neutrals in your textiles (pillows, throws and other soft goods). Some folks even replace art pieces that are out of season. For instance, I always bring out a fun summer blue and white scene of kids flying kites and playing at the beach while the snow scenes go in the closet till next fall. I love to change art; besides, it is easy to store. If art in our house is especially seasonal, it does not stay on the walls after the 21’s. I pay close attention to the spring and fall equinox, March 21 and September 21, when the days and nights are the same in length.

Though artificial greens and flowers are a huge NO NO on most decorators’ list of goodies that make a room feel like home, three artificial arrangements in your home makes soften edges and warm up entire rooms. Now is a perfect time to place some bright spring green leafy branches in a big vase to enlighten a whole room. Look for greens that have variation in color in the leaf. Also be sure the branches can be tweaked to imitate nature. Foliage and flowers are NOT usually perfect in their natural setting so bend and fold the branches so they look like they are coming to life and looking all around the room. Gather an odd number and when they are placed in the container, see that they form a shape that is interesting. The branches or flowers should not look like they will be placed in front of the casket or carried by the bride---TOO PERFECT is not natural.

Other signs of spring in your home are of course, baskets, crosses, sweet peas and other spring flowers, BIRDS and their nests and EGGS, EGGS, and EGGS and the colors white and green and pale pastels including gray. All that should lighten up your home, your life and make your heart sing!
